How It All Started...

In 1988, Obed McPherson was on vacation with his family at Big Ben National Park in Texas. While there, they decided to travel across the Mexican boarder and and purchase some gifts for their friends and family. As he wandered the marketplace, Obed met a man that was selling rocks named Steven. They struck up a conversation and it turned out that Steven was a Seventh-Day Adventist that attended the local church there in Mexico. Steven shared with Obed that his church had no building of their own, and had been meeting in the local Baptist Church until their membership had become so large that this was no longer feasible. After a long discussion, Obed was impressed that he should do something about this situation. After much prayer and deliberation, Obed shared with Steven that he would be back with a group to build them a new church.

Obed and his family returned from their Texas vacation to their home in Berrien Springs, Michigan, with a mission on their mind. He met a young student that was attending Andrews University by the name of Jason Sutton. Jason somehow had heard about Obed and his plans to build a church in Mexico, and became super excited about this effort, and immediately phoned his parents Rich and Pam Sutton, who lived in northern Michigan. Not long after this, a small group of 16 people from northern Michigan joined Obed, and went to Mexico. Together they built a beautiful church where that Steven and his brothers and sisters in Christ could now call their own.

Rich and Pam, smitten by their experience in Mexico, decided to return with another group to build a church over the Christmas Holidays, and thus was born Mexico Missions. Every year since 1988, Rich and Pam have organized a group to go and build churches in Mexico. To date, Mexico Missions has built 25 churches. Obed is now in his 80's and not able to go on the trips anymore, still raises money for these mission trips by mowing grass around the Berrien Springs area.

The first Mexico Mission trip members consisted of Pat & Ray Kimble, Rich, Amie & Jason Sutton, Brian & Jilane Fenner, Jack & Nancy Johnson, Brenton & Benjie Rodgers, Stephanie  Feak, Rachel Olds, Traci Parker &Vern Gardner.
